Massage Insurance in the GTA: Check Your Plan First

Massage benefits and claim procedures vary by insurer, employer plan, and individual policy. Do not assume that an RMT appointment, an in-home visit, or the full appointment fee will be covered.

Questions to ask your insurer before booking

Use the member portal or contact the insurer directly and ask:

• Does my plan cover massage therapy provided by a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT)?

• Is a physician’s or nurse practitioner’s referral required?

• Are mobile or in-home appointments eligible?

• What annual, per-visit, or fee limits apply?

• What information must appear on the receipt?

• Is direct billing available for my plan and this provider?

• If direct billing is unavailable, how do I submit the receipt myself?

Keep the answer or reference number with your benefits records. Coverage information can change, and another person’s successful claim does not confirm your eligibility.

Receipt and direct-billing expectations

A professional receipt can support a claim, but it does not guarantee reimbursement. The insurer makes the coverage decision under the terms of your plan.

Direct billing should also be confirmed before the appointment. Availability may depend on the insurer, plan rules, provider setup, and whether the claim can be processed electronically. If a claim cannot be submitted directly or is declined, you may need to pay and submit your receipt yourself.

Before an in-home appointment

When contacting your insurer, specifically mention that the appointment will take place at home or another mobile setting. Ask whether travel-related charges, if any, are excluded and whether the receipt needs additional details.
